To celebrate the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, a special assembly was held on Monday, October 1, 2018, in G. D. Goenka Public School, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. The morning commenced with Principal, Mr Sanjay Yadav, leading the school in prayer. After Shweta Sharma of IXB read the news, Anusha Chaddha of XB acquainted the gathering with the yeoman service rendered by the Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Kailash Satyarthi, founder of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, in transforming the lives of thousands of children who were victims of slavery, trafficking and child labour. This was followed by a melodious rendition of the devotional song, “Vaishnava Jana To”, by the children of Senior Indian Vocal Activity. “Vaishnav Jana To”, a 15th century bhajan, was a part of Mahatma Gandhi’s daily prayer. Class III children reminisced Gandhiji’s quotes on world peace. Riya Chaudhri of VIIIC spoke about the significance of Gandhi Jayanti and observation of 2nd October as the International Day of Non-Violence. This was followed by the Principal’s address to the students about the need to follow Gandhiji’s ideals. Thereafter he led the school in taking a pledge to be responsible citizens of the country and the world. The celebration culminated with the school singing national anthem together.
